The basalt concrete stone according to the invention is made exclusively from basalt grain fractions, cement and water, in other words entirely without additions of quartz sand. At least 70% of the total stone mass consists of basalt grain fractions, 10% of grain sizes between 65 and 500 mu m. The smallest grains which are saponified with the water remain on or near the stone surface and impart to it a silkily shimmering shine; the surface has the character of a natural stone. Laid in areas, basalt concrete stones cannot be distinguished from natural stones. This new basalt concrete stone with the character of a natural stone affords interesting possibilities for laying pavings. With the optical advantage of natural stone it combines the constant compressive strength and the uniformity of a concrete stone. It is economical and easy to lay, because each stone has precisely the same outline and the same compressive strength as the adjacent stones. Moreover, it is considerably cheaper in terms of materials (45-65%) than a comparable natural stone. As a result of its accurate outlines, it can be laid more closely and consequently protects in particular ladies' shoes. It is ideal for paving large areas (marketplaces, schoolyards and the like) because a paving made of basalt concrete stones according to the invention is uniformly compression-proof over large areas and also shows no sinking even after being subjected to the effects of traffic for a relatively long time. <IMAGE>
