The device according to the invention permits the controlled towing away of motor vehicles with protection of the towing-away cable by arranging a sound body in the central region of the towing-away cable in that the said sound body touches the surface of the carriageway when the towing-away cable sags and produces a clearly perceptible noise in the vehicles involved in the towing-away process. The device is surprisingly simple and effective and can also be used as a retrofit device for existing towing-away cables and, in a special embodiment, serves at the same time as a compact storing container for the towing-away cable together with its end attachment hooks.
