An apparatus for conducting ion exchange operations comprises a vessel (20) having an internal cylindrical element (12) extending the length of the vessel (20). The interior of this inner cylindrical element (12) defines a volume (7) for containing an ion exchange resin (17). The outer surface of the inner cylindrical element (12) and the inner surface of the vessel (20) walls (15) define an annular volume (9) for containing an ion exchange resin (14) which may be that same or different than that resin (17) contained by the inner cylindrical volume.
