PURPOSE:To reduce the use rate of side parts in the breadthwise direction of a magnetic tape and to improve the reliability of data by recording data on the magnetic tape successively from a track in the center part in the breadthwise direction of the magnetic tape to tracks in side parts in the breadthwise direction of the magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION:The sequence of tracks where data should be recorded is read out from a table memory 9; and first, the track in the center part in the breadthwise direction of the magnetic tape is designated, and a VCM6 is driven on a basis of this signal to move and position an R/W gap part of a magnetic head 4 to the track in the center part in the breadthwise direction of the magnetic tape 1. The magnetic tape 1 is run in this state to record data on the magnetic tape 1 successively. That is, data is recorded while selecting tracks successively from the track in the center part in the breadthwise direction of the magnetic tape to tracks in side ends. Since data is not recorded on the magnetic tape 1 up to the full width probably, the probability that data is recorded on parts which are apt to be most deteriorated by tape guides 3 or the like is reduced to improve the reliability of data. |
