PURPOSE:To substantially decrease light transmittance so that a magnetic recording medium is made suitable for an automatic run and stop system of a magnetic tape utilizing photodetection and to obtain the magnetic recording medium which has an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristic and permits high density recording in particular by using a substrate having light shieldability and using Co-deposited gamma-Fe2O3 having >=35m<2>/g BET value as magnetic powder for a magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer formed by dispersing the Co-deposited gamma-Fe2O3 having >=35m<2>/g particle size in BET value of the magnetic powder into a resin binder is provided on the tape- or sheet-shaped substrate having the light shieldability. For example, the magnetic layer 1, a transparent plastic film 2 of a polyester which is the base, a plastic film 3 having the light shieldability and a back coat layer 4 are provided. The above-mentioned magnetic layer is formed on the substrate formed in the above-mentioned manner. |
