NEW MATERIAL:1-Ethyl-5-isobutylbarbituric acid of formula I or its salt. USE:Medium for the culture of epithelial cell. When the compound is added to a cell culture medium such as MEM medium, DI medium, etc., the physiological maintenance period of epithelial cell can be prolonged while keeping the physiological function of the epithelial cell. Epithelial cell can be survived in the medium for >=1 month. The concentration of the compound in the medium is preferably 0.1-10mM, especially 0.5-5mM for the medium for initial culture. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the isobutylmalonic acid diester of formula II (R is lower alkyl) with N-ethylurea of formula III preferably in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate in a solvent such as ethanol under heat refluxing.
