This method consists in: - storing, in a computer 9, the predetermined template characteristics; - locating the external and internal contours of the material 13 to be cut out, as well as the defects in the latter and storing them in the computer 9; - calculating, with the aid of the computer, the useful surface area of the material; - producing, on a screen 11, the interactive positioning of the imaginary templates memorised in the computer by superpositioning them on an image of the material in sheet form 13 reproduced on this same screen 11; - calculating the surface area occupied by the already "positioned" templates; - checking the material-useful-surface-area/already-positioned-templates-surface-area ratio, and - modifying the positioning of the templates on the screen 11 until the desired surface area ratio is obtained.
