The invention relates to a rowing practice apparatus which is equipped with a frame, provided with a guide rail on which a sliding seat is displaceably mounted and with a footboard or two foot supports, and with a handle which is connected via a belt to a retraction device which is accommodated in the front part of the frame and is subjected to the action of a spring, the latter having a drum for winding-up the belt. In order both to permit protected storage of the belt during non-use of the apparatus and to stop damage to the belt during use of the apparatus, the invention makes provision for the drum (7) to be accommodated in a housing (11) which, in the region of the belt inlet/outlet, has a recess (11a) which is closed by a cover (12) that is pivotably or displaceably mounted in the frame (1) and has a guide slit (12a) for the belt (8). <IMAGE>
