The invention relates to a cell for generating gas which in its initial state contains a) only electrochemically oxidizable materials and a hydrogen generation electrode and an aqueous electrolyte or b) only electrochemically reducible materials and an oxygen generation electrode and an aqueous electrolyte, and which in the event of an externally impressed current passing through forms hydrogen or oxygen which is produced in the pores of a gas diffusion electrode and reaches the outer chamber via the pores of a hydrophobic diffusion membrane, while the electrolyte is retained in the interior of the cell vessel by the high capillary depression of said membrane.
