The device 1 has rolls 14, 15 which are arranged horizontally in pairs and of which the upper rolls are fitted at their shaft ends 18 with ball-bearings 6 which can be lifted and lowered in clasp-like guides 7. U-shaped pushing parts 17 are guided with their webs 3, 4 in slide bearings 2 and are displaceable to and fro by a displacement travel X. In the webs 3, 4, there are recesses 9, 10. The upper recesses 10 adjoin mouldings 19 with bevels 5c. Between the mouldings and the underside of the upper web 4, there are perforated spacers 22 which determine the contact pressure, a stock 23 of spacers 22 being located opposite these on the upper side of the web 4. Screws 24, 25 penetrate the perforated spacers 22 and the upper web 4 and are screwed into the internal thread of bores 28, 29 in the mouldings 19. The ball-bearings 6 roll over the bevelled edges and, in the pressing position, are moved downwards by the bevels 5c in the guides 7 and, in the lifting position, are moved upwards by the lower edges 5a. The recesses 9 in the lower web 3 are offset by the displacement travel X relative to the recesses 10 in the upper web 4. Each pushing part 17 comprises a rack 11 into which a toothed wheel fragment 12 engages which is pivotable by means of a pivoting lever 16 about an axis 13 which is mounted in the sideplate 20.
