The invention relates to a mechanical seal and to means for deformation of the axially displaceable slip ring in accordance with changes in the operating conditions. In order to permit exact and continuous adaptation of the sealing gap to the disturbing variables which occur in operation, the invention proposes that the secondary seal of the axially displaceable slip ring be divided into two seals arranged in series, between which there emerge one or more conduits which carry medium fed in from outside, which deforms the slip ring.
