The invention relates to a process for sealing roofs, balconies, terraces or the like by applying a composition which dries out and/or sets. The invention also relates to roof surfaces, wall surfaces or floor surfaces sealed in accordance with this process. In order to be able again to discharge moisture which has penetrated or accumulated, the surface to be sealed is coated, before applying the sealing composition, with a barrier sheet which is connected to the surface to be sealed and onto which the sealing composition is applied. Through vents which have been fitted beforehand onto the surface to be sealed or through venting ducts connected to the gap-shaped space beneath the barrier sheet, the moisture, which has penetrated beforehand through damaged areas of the old exterior skin, evaporates in the gap-shaped space beneath the barrier sheet and is discharged from said space through the roof-ventilating means, with the result that damage to the roof structure as a result of corrosion or rotting, and undesired mechanical loading by absorbed water, are avoided.
