A chimney is composed of a plurality of successive shells, to be precise, for example, of an outer shell (1) consisting of concrete blocks, of an insulating-material layer (2) and of an inner shell (3). In order to achieve absolute moisture protection with low outlay, in particular in the case of chimneys which are to be erected by the prefabricated construction method, the inner shell (3) is designed in a double-walled manner, an annular interspace (6) being provided between the inner pipe (4) and the outer pipe (5). In this arrangement, the inner pipe (4) is connected to the waste-gas generator, while the interspace (6) between the inner pipe (4) and the outer pipe (5) can be ventilated. <IMAGE>
