Tests with models and recent findings have provided a new basis for the calculation of the circumferential forces and supporting forces in epicyclic mechanisms. This has made it possible to develop epicyclic-mechanism switching arrangements in which the web of the mechanisms has an indifferent state of equilibrium without additional support. By means of the contraconnection of the web forces present, these are compensated in such a way that there is an equilibrium of forces and moments. This makes possible an adjustment of the web without transmission losses and hence adjustment of the output speed and of the output torque. A controller is required for the adjustment of the web and this should require only as much energy as is necessary to overcome the bearing and gearwheel friction of the mechanism. If a speed slip of 3 % to 5 % is acceptable, it is also possible to take the control energy from the input; if the controller has a matched braking function, the mechanisms can be set automatically to the required output torque.
