Spreading of a so-called road marking line on a roadway is usually carried out by discharging heated and soft line material through a gap at the bottom of a moving spreading apparatus. The gap, however, becomes easily plugged, since the spreading material has a tendency to solidify in the gap and block it. In order to eliminate this drawback, the apparatus according to the invention is provided with a wedge- shaped 7 valve body 8, which acts as a restrictor for the discharge opening. When the gap is closed, the wedge 7 will be pressed down into the discharge opening and will fill this completely such that no spreading material 2 will be left in the opening. The area of the discharge opening can be adjusted by means of adjustable bottom plates 6 and the valve body 8 can be moved up and down relative to the discharge opening by means of a motor 13 or a camshaft 2, 22. In order to obtain a good mix of the line material 2 in the spreading reservoir 5, it is forcibly circulated around the restrictors 8 by means of a pump 3. <IMAGE>
