PURPOSE:To carry out the hydroxylation of an olefinic compound in high selectivity and yield, by using a non-corrosive catalyst resistant to catalyst poison and composed of an auric compound and a transition metal chloride and/or bromide. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxylated olefin (e.g. propylene glycol) is produced by hydroxylating an olefinic compound having at least one ethylenic unsaturated bond (e.g. propylene) with oxygen and water in the presence of a catalyst derived from (A) an auric compound, especially tetrachloroauric acid tetrahydrate or tetrabromoauric acid pentahydrate and (B) a chloride and/or bromide of a transition metal, especially at least one kind of metals selected from Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn. |
