A process for regulating the heat flux produced by a domestic refuse incinerator for heating a heat exchange fluid, having a combustion chamber provided with a grid for supporting a layer of domestic refuse undergoing combustion and to which a monitored and modulatable make-up amount of heat is supplied, characterised by using for said make-up amount of heat an auxiliary solid fuel which is formed by particles of coal which are of a size of between 0 and 6 millimetres and which are introduced into the combustion chamber from a storage hopper by means of a conveying air flow, separating the air and the coal in the vicinity of the combustion chamber, and introducing the particles of coal within the combustion chamber above the incandescent layer of domestic refuse supported by the grid, at a flow rate which is metered in dependence on the flow rate of the heat exchange fluid, in such a way that combustion of said particles occurs substantially before they reach said layer, the combustion air required for said particules being essentially taken from the excess of combustion air for the domestic refuse.
