6-Amino penicillanic acid 1,1-dioxide can be prepared, without the need to protect either the amino group or the carboxy group during oxidation, by oxidation of 6-amino penicillanic acid or 6-amino penicillanic acid sulfoxide with permanganate in an aqueous medium.
