PURPOSE:To discard oily waste as a solid material which has no fluidity and is convenient to handle by dispersing the oily waste into water then adding a gelling agent thereto to gel the waste, discarding and incinerating the gelled waste. CONSTITUTION:A gelling agent is added to a dispersion adjusted to 8/2-1/9 in the weight ratio of oily waste/water to gel the oily waste. The gelled waste formed in such a way is discarded and incinerated. A gelling agent consisting of a combination of a water soluble salt such as sodium salt, potassium salt or the like of alginicacid, and a polyvalent metallic compd. that can form polyvalent metallic ion or the like is used as the above-described gelling agent. The amt. of the gelling agent to be added to 100 parts mixture composed of the oily waste and water is preferably 0.5-30 parts in the case of using the water soluble alginate. There are waste oils such as mineral oils, vegetable oils and animal oils, org. solvents, etc. that can be mixed with water as the oily waste to be gelled.
