Dialkanolamines and nontoxic pharmaceutically-acceptable acid-addition salts of the compounds of the following formula <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen lower alkyl, or fluoro; R2 is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are the same or different and selected from the group consisting of hydrogen or lower alkyl or R3 and R4 together define a chemical bond directly linking the two alkanol chains so as to form a pyrrolidine ring; Ar, is phenyl or thienyl or phenyl substituted with one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and halo; and Ar2 is phenyl and phenyl substituted with one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and halo which have antidepressant activity.
