The system is intended for treating renal insufficiency using an artificial kidney with one side connected, via a pump and a catheter, with the blood stream of the patient whilst the other side connects to a closed expansion chamber with an apical air pressure line and, a few millimetres lower, to an infusion line. This line permits preliminary rinsing-out of the kidney, administering medication, and adapting blood level by air injection, whereby pressure fluctuations in the chamber or in a compliance chamber are indicated on a pressure gauge. - The feeding of a pre-determd. vol. of (arterial) blood to the chamber via the artificial kidney and also the return of the purified blood to the bloodstream are effected alternately through the same system using a reversible pump of which the operation is automatically controlled by a measuring and control unit. |
