PURPOSE:To provide an internal-combustion engine member such as a piston with a heat-insulating property and reduce the weight of the member, by coating the member with a mixed molten layer made of ceramic fibers and an oxide such as zirconia. CONSTITUTION:An internal-combustion engine member such as a piston is coated with a mixed molten layer. For the coating, ceramic fibers such as sliver- like cut-off long or short pieces of short fibers, whiskers or long fibers of SiC, Si3N4, Al2O3 or the like are well mixed with an oxide such as zirconia, the mixed material is made into grains together with an organic or inorganic binder, and the grains are molten and sprayed as a combined melt-sprayed material onto the internal combustion engine member. Otherwise, the ceramic fibers are blown onto the member while the powdered oxide such as zirconia is molten and sprayed onto the member. According to this constitution, the heat-insulating property of the member is enhanced and its weight is reduced. |
