PURPOSE:To obtain inorganic fibers from microcrystals of an aluminum compound containing a specific amount of aluminum nitride and alumina, by spinning a solution of an aluminum compound and an organic high polymer and heating the resultant precursor fibers at a specific temperature in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A viscous solution containing an aluminum compound, preferably aluminum oxychloride and an organic high polymer, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, is spun to give precursor fibers at >=0.5, preferably 1.5-2.5 atomic ratio of aluminum atoms to carbon atoms, which are then heated, preferably at >=1,000 deg.C, preferably 1,400-1,700 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere containing nitrogen and/or ammonia to afford the aimed inorganic fibers, consisting of microcrystals of an aluminum compound containing >=10wt% preferably >=50wt% aluminum nitride and the remainder of alumina and having preferably <=10mum diameter and >=50 ratio of the length to the diameter. USE:Suitable for producing printed circuit base boards requiring electrical insulating properties and thermal conductivity.
