PURPOSE:To readily introduce cation exchange groups in high density into either the surface or the whole of polymeric material in an arbitrary manner, by making a multifunctional compound having acid halide group etc. act, in the presence of a Fridal-Crafts catalyst, on an aromatic ring-contg. polymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective introduction of cation exchange groups can be accomplished by making (A) a multifunctional compound having either at least two acid halide groups (e.g. sulfonyl halide one) or each at least one acid halide group and acid anhydride one (e.g. carboxylic anhydride group) act, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. AlCl3, BF3, H2SO4), in an organic solvent, on (B) an aromatic ring-contg. polymer [e.g. derived from vinyl monomer of either formula I (R1is H, CH3 or vinyl; R2 is H, vinyl or 1-12C alkyl; Ar is aromatic ring), II (R3is the same as R2) or III (X is halogen).] EFFECT:Crosslinking also occurring simultaneously; thus, if applied to molded product, its structure would by kept stable for a long period. USE:For manufacturing ion exchange membranes, etc.
