PURPOSE:To prevent the poor initial working of hydraulic pressure from a primary cylinder at the time of car start after long rest by introducing temporarily line pressure to said cylinder for a torque converter and thereby filling hydraulic oil in said cylinder. CONSTITUTION:When a belt type continuously variable transmission is controlled, output signals from each sensor 71-74 are first read into a control unit 70 and actual car speed 'i' and a target speed change ratio 'is' are obtained respectively at an actual speed calculation part 75 and a target speed change ratio retrieval part 76. Then, changed speed di/dt is obtained by using the values of 'i' and 'is' and a factor 'k', and a duty ratio 'D' applicable to the solenoid valve 67 of a speed change control system is obtained on the basis of the changed speed so obtained and the value of 'i'. On the other hand, when a choke switch 87 has been turned 'ON' at the start of an engine and a start judging part 88 has judged that the engine has started after long rest, while a car stop judging part 86 judging that a car is at rest, said duty ratio 'D' is set approximately to 100% for a predetermined time via a speed change performance part 89.
