PURPOSE:To produce an activated carbon having high specific surface area economically in high yield, by compounding an aldehyde and an acid catalyst or alkaline catalyst to the distillation residue of crude tar acid, carrying out the addition condensation of the mixture, mixing the obtained resin with pitch and carbonizing and activating the mixture. CONSTITUTION:The distillation residue of crude tar acid is mixed with (A) an aldehyde such as formaldehyde and (B) an acid catalyst or an alkaline catalyst, and the mixture is resinified by the condensation addition reaction in a resin production apparatus under refluxing in vacuum. The obtained resin is mixed with pitch at a weight ratio of about 99:1-1:99 at a temperature below the hardening temperature of the resin and above the softening point or melting point of the resin. The mixture is carbonized and activated at about 700-950 deg.C to obtain a high-performance activated carbon containing fine pores and having high specific surface area and low ash content. |
