NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is alkenyl of formula II, III or IV having CH3 at 3-position). EXAMPLE:3,7-Dimethyl-7-octeno-gamma-lactone. USE:A component of perfumery composition. It emits unique sweet and lasting floral, fruity, milky or butter-like fragrance or flavor and is useful as an agent to impart fragrance or flavor to a perfumery composition. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein R is group of formula IV can be produced by (1) reacting crotonaldehyde of formula V with methacryl halide and a Grignard reagent of metallic Mg, (2) subjecting the resultant compound of formula VI to thermal rearrangement reaction in the presence of methyl orthoacetate and an acid catalyst such as propionic acid, (3) hydrolyzing the reaction product to the compound of formula VII and (4) reacting the compound with SnCl4 in dichloromethane. |
