A separator for tubular type cell comprises a tubular body 10 formed by winding a separator foil element 12 around itself, this separator foil element 12 containing a thermofusible material and being fused thermally and fixed at its upper and lower end parts 16 around the circular peripheries of the tubular body 10. The direction of manufacture Y or favoured direction of the fibres of the separator foil element 12 is arranged to run parallel to the direction of the axis of winding Z of the separator foil element 12. These arrangements improve ion transmission between positive and negative active materials, and, by reducing the constraints of curvature of the foil on winding, improve the dimensional tolerances.
