A device for lowering and raising a manhole cover (2) has underneath the manhole cover a lifting device engaging into the edge region (3). This lifting device preferably comprises a central threaded spindle (5) and a lifting tube (9), which can be adjusted vertically by the said threaded spindle and is guided in an outer sliding tube (10). A pivotable mounting of the manhole cover (2) on the upper journal (4) of the lifting tube (9) allows the manhole cover (2) to be brought into any desired positions. <IMAGE>
