An automatic rental machine for electronically identifiable articles, especially video-tape cassettes, which accomplishes the issue and return of the articles automatically as a function of the evaluation of individual data relating to the user and to the article and of other data, is improved in that, for each article, an immovable storage compartment (10) corresponding to its data is provided in a common housing (1, 2) and a transporter (4 to 7), which travels between a test channel (12) serving for the entry and exit of the articles and the individual storage compartments (10), transports each of the articles individually. Preferably, the storage compartments (10) are arranged in a plane manner in columns and rows and the transporter (4 to 7) moves in the direction of the columns and rows and perpendicularly to these. The transporter consists of spindles (4, 5, 6) arranged in an H-shaped manner and of a gripper (7) which is preferably moved by means of a transport belt and which grasps the articles in a tong-like manner. <IMAGE>
