The invention relates to a seal for the cover slot of discontinuously operating devices for the surface treatment of workpieces, for example cleaning machines of the suspension railway type. The aim of the invention is to design the seal of the cover slot so as to prevent danger to the operating staff, contamination of the environment and impairment of machines and equipment by abrasives. The object of providing a secure seal against the escape of abrasives and dust is achieved according to the invention by pivotable cover-slot flaps. The latter are moved via pivoting levers and consist of a plurality of different-width rubber plates which overlap in labyrinth fashion upon closure of the flaps. Incorporated apertures guarantee the passage of the load-carrying means of the conveying device. <IMAGE>
