PURPOSE:To reduce the loss of connection without any mismatching of impedance when an optical waveguide is connected to an optical fiber by forming a core part by using pure quartz. CONSTITUTION:The core part 3 which guides light is formed of substantially pure quartz, e.g. fused quartz, synthetic quartz, optical glass, etc. The core part 3 made of the pure quartz is surrounded with a clad part 4 having a low refractive index on a substrate 5. When a quartz optical fiber 4 is connected to the core part 3, there is almost no difference in refractive index between the both, so there is no difference in impedance and the loss of the connection is reduced. Consequently, the transmission loss of the whole optical communication system is reduced. |
