A description is given of a braking device for vehicle wheels, the brake shoes of which, which are arranged in a brake drum, can be expanded by means of an application device which, for its part can be actuated by a brake cylinder attached to the brake and the plate. The atmosphere-side cylinder chamber penetrated by a brake-cylinder push rod interacting with the application device is connected to the interior of the brake drum via a connecting line. This ensures that, when the push rod is moved into its initial position, it is impossible for spray or splashed water thrown up by the wheel and running down the cylinder housing to be sucked into the atmosphere-side cylinder chamber. In this arrangement, the length of the connecting line selected can be correspondingly small and the said line, being rigid, is easy to install since there are no relative movements to be compensated between the spaces connected by it. The atmosphere-side cylinder chamber furthermore remains free from residues since any dirt particles which enter it are blown out of it again when the braking device is actuated.
