A plurality of subscriber stations (1, 2, 3, 4) in each case equipped with a transmitting and a receiving unit are linked by a network with a star-shaped structure. The signals transmitted from the individual subscriber stations to the star point (5) are combined to form a composite signal which is then amplified, the amplified composite signal then being forwarded to all subscriber stations and, in the subscriber stations, a specific signal part designated for the respective subscriber station being filtered out from the composite signal. Known coding and decoding methods can be used to ensure that the signal transmitted from a subscriber station can be received as required by all or only some of the other subscriber stations. Unlike conventional star-shaped networks with an active star point in which each subscriber station in the star point has its own assigned transmitting and receiving unit, the method according to the invention offers the advantage of a considerable simplification of the star point which is particularly evident in networks based on optical waveguides. <IMAGE>
