In a two-stroke internal combustion engine, into the cylinder of which a fluid forming a hydraulic piston is introduced, a float axially reciprocating in the cylinder is provided in order to calm the surface of the fluid. The float is guided in the cylinder by a plurality of guideways spaced radially inwards from its cylinder wall and limited in its capacity for downwards movement in the direction of the crankcase by a stop. The float is just sufficiently large in relation to the cylinder that the combustion gases can pass unimpeded through the intermediate space to the cylinder inner wall.
