Stable vermiculite dispersions which are substantially free of settling are obtained by treating the vermiculite crystals or ore in a dispersion with a citrate anion to enhance their rate and extent of swelling in an aqueous medium and by delaminating the crystals by shearing to provide the dispersion, which comprise a suspension of the delaminated platelets and a citrate anion.
