Horizontal electric coalescer has three compartments through whcih emulsions of polar and non-polar liquids are sequentially passed for sepn. The third compartment has an array of parallel plates in the direction of fluid flow and is inclined to the horizontal. The first section of each plate is formed of electrically conductive material whilst the second section, fixed to the first section as a continution, is formed by an electrical insulator. An electrical source is connected to the first section of each plate to generate an electric field in the passage-way between the plates to expose the liquid mixt. first to the electric field and then to a degrading electric field created by degrading charge density on the second section of insulates.
