A method and an embossing machine are proposed for embossing symbols (19) in hard, especially metal workpieces (10) by means of an embossing tool, the symbol (19) being embossed in a first working step. In order to colour the embossed symbol (19) another corresponding embossing movement is performed in a further working step, after a colour carrier (12) has been arranged between the embossing tool (15) and the embossed symbol (19). As a result of the embossing pressure the colour is detached and moulds itself to the symbol (19) with positive fitting, the heat generated guaranteeing adequate anchoring on the metal. In this manner, colouring can be undertaken in a simple manner during the embossing process. <IMAGE>
