A 3-D, uniform, solid cost detergent is formed within a receptacle-shaped mould as follows: (a) a 40-75 wt.% aq. soln. of MOH (M = alkali metal) (20-75 pts.) is heated to 55-95 deg. C; (b) a hardness sequestering agent (I) and an alkaline hydratable chemical (II) (15-40 pts.) are added; (c) the soln. is thickened and mixed to form a castably uniform dispersion; (d) the dispersion is poured into the mould at least partly filling it; and (e) the thickened dispersion is allowed to solidify, with at least one surface of the cast detergent exposed.
