A compsn. for cleaning and altering hard surfaces such that water used in rinsing drains off in uniform sheets, without leaving significant residue or spotting after rinsing, comprises up to 10 (pref. 0.01-5) wt.% of at least 1 polyvinyl alcohol (I) having mol. wt. 22,000-400,000; at least 80.0 wt.% water; a polymer (II) contg. at least 1 prim. or sec. amine gp., and consisting essentially of trimethylolmelamine (IIa), dimethylolethyleneurea, or triazone resin and dialdehyde; and opt. 0.001-10.0 wt.% of a cationic or nonionic surfactant (III) to add detergency without reducing the sheeting action of the rinse water. Wt. ratio (I):(II) is 15:1-1:15, pref. 4-1:1-4.
