The invention relates to an automatic method and device 25 for blanking plates 12. It consists firstly in establishing on the edges 8 of the plates 12 to be blanked, a series of index pairs 14 establishing pairwise the direction of the cutting lines tx1 to be executed. The device 25 includes essentially: - a linear cutting member 27 with vertical movement Z,Z'; - means 32 of triggering the cutting member 27; - a platen 35 which can move with at least two degrees of freedom: one translational along Y, Y' and the other pivoting about the moving translational axis z1, z'1; - means 53 of controlling the movements of the platen 35; - two stationary cameras 57 and 58 arranged horizontally and coaxially for viewing the edges 8, 9 of the plate 12 along the cutting direction X, X'; - a system 60 for electronic processing of the images delivered by the cameras 57, 58 in order to determine automatically the position of the centres C 14 of the indices 14 and control the movement of the platen 35 so as to ensure coincidence between the cutting line x1, x'1 joining the indices 14 and the cutting direction X, X' of the blade 31.
