Process for the treatment of high-powered liquid radioactive waste containing nuclear fission products, actinides and other radioactive substances dissolved therein. According to the invention the liquid waste is mixed with an acidic solution of aluminium, yttrium, zirconium or magnesium in nitric acid, the mixture is evaporated to dryness, the resulting solid is dehydrated and denitrified at approximately 600 DEG C in an inert atmosphere and the dehydrated and denitrified product is heat-treated at 800-1400 DEG C in an atmosphere containing oxygen to give a solidified product which is thermodynamically stable and of the water-resistant type of zirconia with a structure of the fluorite type, of magnetoplumbite with hexagonal structure, of spinel with cubic structure, of an alloy phase, and the like, the attached drawing shows the curves of leaching of caesium from various solidified liquid wastes. The invention applies especially to the treatment of radioactive waste. <IMAGE>
