PURPOSE:To deflect light electromagnetically by using a magnetic body without providing any mechanical movable part by diffracting the polarized light which is transmitted through a transparent ferromagnetic thin piece by striped magnetic domains and varying the mode of the diffraction according to the mode of magnetic field application. CONSTITUTION:When an external magnetic field 9 is applied to a surface of the transparent ferromagnetic thin film 1, striped magnetic domains 10 extending in the direction of the applied magnetic field are formed and magnetism vectors 11 and 12 which cross each other are generated in alternate magnetic domains 10, so that the width of the stripes and the angle of intersection of the vectors vary with the intensity of the magnetic field 9. For the purpose, currents are supplied to couples of coils 4a and 4b, and 5a and 5b arranged crossing each other to apply an external magnetic field with optional intensity in an optional direction, and striped magnetic domains having optional width are formed in an optional direction; and a linear polarized light beam 6 from a polarizer 2 is made incident to the surface of the thin film 1 at right angles to obtain 1-order light 7 and -1-order light 8 demultiplexed by an analyzer 3. |
