PURPOSE:To achieve reduction of printing noise, increase of printing speed, and improvement in quality of a recording character or the like by a method wherein a step motor is driven according to variation of an inertia load loaded on the step motor from a detection value of an ink residual amount. CONSTITUTION:When a counting value preliminarily established is counted to be reached with a counter 31 for counting a discharge signal from a printing processor 28, a signal is outputted to an ink residual amount detector 32. When a weight of a carriage 3 is decreased to a certain extent, the ink residual amount detector 32 identifies a decreased amount from a product of a discharged weight of preliminarily measured ink multiplied by total number of printing pulses, and detects the residual amount of ink by computing a difference between the decreased amount and an initial ink weight. Since an inertia load of the carriage 3 varies extremely by decrease of ink, by selecting an optimum pulse width of a step motor 13 driving signal according to the residual amount of ink, printing speed can be increased without generating strain in a character structure of a dot matrix. |
