A mechanical locking device for two adjacent electromagnetically operable switching apparatuses (10, 11) having interrupter heads which are adjustable in the coil longitudinal direction and are effectively connected via in each case one lever (31, 32) to the magnet armature (29, 30), the two magnet armatures (29, 30) being moved in opposite directions. In order to provide a high level of locking security while maintaining simple handling it is provided that the projections (31a, 32a) are integrally formed on the free ends of the two levers (31, 32), which ends are movable as a function of the armature displacement and which projections are situated inside the switching apparatus chamber, do not penetrate the base area (15) of the switching apparatuses and are effectively connected to one another via a two-armed locking lever (18) which is supported in an integral connecting device (20) which is arranged between the two switching apparatuses (10, 11), fixes the latter in the correct position and can rotate, and that the connecting device (20) be arranged between the two switching apparatuses (10, 11). <IMAGE>
