Self-crosslinking cationic paint binders in which the cross-inking is effected through the reaction of methanecarboxylic acid dialkylester monoamide structures with free hydroxyl or amino groups on the resin are described. The crosslinking functionality is provided by reaction of a polyisocyanate with a corresponding quantity of a CH-active alkyl ester. The alkyl ester is preferably a malonic acid dimethylester or malonic acid diethylester.
