The invention relates to a process for the preparation of alkylsulphonates of acrylic acid and of methacrylic acid by esterification thereof with a hydroxyalkanesulphonic acid, the esterification being carried out in the presence of aliphatic compounds which contain sulphur and/or phosphorus in low valency states as polymerization inhibitors. The monomers are used for the preparation of polymers which serve e.g. as stabilizers for aqueous dispersions or for textile finishing using antistatic finishes.
