Mixtures of vinyl addition polymers comprising (a) a hydrophilic, highly cationic vinyl addition polymer having a mean molecular weight of at least 1,000,000 and a content of ka mol % of copolymerised cationic vinyl monomer and (b) a hydrophilic, weakly cationic to nonionic vinyl addition polymer having a mean molecular weight of at least 1,000,000 and a content of kb of copolymerised cationic vinyl monomer, where kb is a number from zero to 40, and ka is a number from 60 to 100, and ka - kb is >/= 60, or polymers (a) where ka >/= 85 and containing a hydrocarbon sulphonate counterion, optionally in the form of aqueous preparations, are suitable as flocculants for aqueous suspensions and in particular as sludge dewatering agents.
