A drainage appliance, particularly for retrofitting in areas located below the damming level of the waste water channel, consists of a pump unit (1) composed of a pump (2) and an electric drive motor (3), a holding container (4) which can be fitted in a hole in the bottom and into which the pump unit (1) can be inserted, an inlet port (6) for the water to be pumped off and a discharge line and electric cable connection (7) and (8), respectively. In order to provide a technically particularly simple and readily fitted drainage appliance, the pump (2) is disposed in the upper section, and the electric drive motor (3) is disposed in the lower section of the pump unit (1), the inlet port (6) and the discharge line connection (7) are formed in the upper end face of the pump (2), and the holding container (4), which is open at the top, is dimensioned in such a way that at least in the upper region its internal dimension essentially corresponds to the external dimension of the casing surrounding the pump unit (1) and that, when the pump unit is inserted (1), its topside and the upper end face of the pump (2) are at approximately the same level. <IMAGE>
