Process for the preparation of a water-absorbent resin

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a water-absorbent resin which enables only a very small amount of unreacted monomer to remain in the resultant polymer and which also gives a polymer having high gel strength and good water-absorption properties. The process comprises using a water-soluble polymerisation initiator and an oil-soluble polymerisation initiator as polymerisation initiators if an aqueous solution of a monomer which forms a water-absorbent resin is polymerised in suspension or emulsion in an organic solvent in order to prepare a water-absorbent resin. The water-absorbent resin prepared by this process can be used as water-retaining agents for soils, as seed dressings, as water-blocking agents, as condensation inhibitors and as body fluid absorption agents, for example as sanitary towels or paper nappies (diapers).
